Abstract

The time of origin of the military office of strategoi, had a significant impact on the political situation in Athens in the fifth century BC, still causes debate among historians, as there is no single agreed date of it. There are many who deny its existence to 501 B.C. Others do not express any definite opinion, due to the lack of information about the military organization of Athens in the sixth century B.C. Therefore, this article will attempt to prove the existence of strategoi to 501 B.C. Also there will be done a brief analysis of the ancient tradition that mentions strategoi of the archaic Athens. It is should be noted that the conclusions given at the end of the article are not final assessment, and largely hypothetical, inasmuch as considered here topic is so problematic that unambiguous solution here seems to be a very complicated task.
