Abstract

The article explores the position of strategoi on the background of a turbulent political life unfolded in Athens in the first decade of the V-th century BC up to 489 BC. It is established that the strategoi for the most part of the 490th BC had no considerable influence in shaping domestic and in Athens. Mostly the title of the strategoi had been gained by these or those representatives of the leading political groups of Athens who actually acted in their interests. But due to the aggravation of the foreign policy, the situation in Athens has changed, and Miltiades managed to use it to rally around his person fragile anti-Persian coalition. Holding the position of a strategos he actually, albeit for a short period of time, became the first citizen of Athens. However, being a human far from the democracy Miltiades was not a simple selfless servant of the demos, and if the Parian expedition conceived by him would succeed he would get in the Aegean his new domain instead lost Thracian Chersonese.
