Abstract

The large vertically and horizontally integrated groups of companies, and conglomerates are the most common forms of industrial diversification of activities in the steel industry, which are appeared as the result of the development of institutional forms of cooperation between economic entities. However, in the scientific literature are not fully investigated peculiar qualities of diversification of the domestic groups of companies in the metallurgical industry of Ukraine. In this paper, firstly, is defined the list of groups of companies; secondly, the types of diversification of the activities of the leading groups of companies during the 2008 - 2013 years are identified; third, the choice of tools to assess the level of diversification of domestic diversified business groups is grounded; fourthly, the level and the main trends of development of diversification processes of leading groups of companies is estimated. The study showed that the majority of enterprises of the metallurgical industry of Ukraine are comprised in the diverse groups of companies. The level of the diversification of the activities of the leading Ukrainian business groups are recommended to implement on the base of the index and specialization index of Atton, that, given the sectoral distribution of employed workers, actually allow to identify the diversification processes and monitor their dynamics. The findings allow expanding the knowledge about the current situation and economic processes that are taking place within the mining and metallurgical industry of Ukraine.
