The article analyzes different approaches to identify stages of social development, presented in a number of the researches of scientists. It is pointed out that the current stage is defined by the transitional nature of social relations and the gradual change of commodity links. The emerging society is characterized as a postindustrial, information as knowledge society. In the article it is proved, that the transition to a new type of relations is based on the rapid development of information technologies and the allocation of scientific activity as a fundamentally new resource. The feature of scientific activity as a universal determines the growth of the social role of human as a generator and transmitter of knowledge. This leads to a change of the essence of social relations, replacing indirect their proprietary nature, directly social. It is shown that the price of the product of scientific activity is irrational.
