Abstract

The economic and political crisis in the Safavi Empire at the end of the 17th - beginning of the 18th century greatly affected its international situation. Thus, the Ottoman and Russian Empires by using its difficult situation began to intervene in the South Caucasus. As a result, under the terms of the “Istanbul Treaty” concluded between the two empires, the Caspian region - from Derbend to Rasht fell into the sphere of influence of Russia and the areas to the west - to the Ottoman Empire. Then the open intervention of the Ottoman Empire into Azerbaijan began. Soon the territories considered under the treaty were captured by the Ottoman troops. Strengthening in the Erivan region was essential for the Ottoman Empire because it was located on the main road leading to the central regions of Azerbaijan. Therefore, in the summer of 1724, 30 thousand Ottoman troops attacked the Erivan region under the leadership of the Diyarbakır ruler Arif Ahmed Pasha. Soon, the impregnable fortress of the region Erivan was besieged. But the capture of the fortress of Erivan cost dear to the Ottoman army. The article is devoted to the Ottoman troops’ march on Erivan province in summer of 1724. Analyses of sources showed that the local people taken shelter in Erivan fortress had repulsed four large-scale Ottoman attacks on the fortress within 3 months, and had inflicted them grievous loss. Having lost their hope to central government’s support the Erivan population stopped resistance. And following the surrender of the Erivan fortress the entire province was seized.
