The article considers the problem of motivating students to study, in particular the motivation to study at the post graduate course. The concepts of motivation from the point of view of different scientists, the problem of lack of motivation in students, the emotional aspect of motivation, types and techniques of motives, as well as advice on how to increase student’s motivation to study. The aim of the article is to define the concept of "motivation", its types and features of students’ motivation in the process of postgraduate study. The study of literature sources and approaches to assess students’ motivation has shown that many of its aspects require constant monitoring and analysis. The object of study is the motivational sphere of personality. The authors analyzed the factors that influence motivation and general strategies that form motives. The authors also considered the problems of forming the motivational sphere of the modern student. The advantages, disadvantages and the scope of using methodological approaches to assessing student motivation are reflected. Recommendations are given to substantiate the motivational features of choosing a specialty and university and further students’ development.
