Main market trends of freight pail transportation of Ukraine

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to determine the main trends in the market of rail freight transportions in Ukraine in the period 2015-2020 on the basis of a set of indicators that characterize the quantitative and qualitative measurements of railway transport. The article analyzes the development trends of the market of freight rail transportation in the period 2015-2020. The following trends are considered in the article. Reduction of the part of freight rail transportation in the freight market of Ukraine due to the intensification of intramodal competition between rail and road transport. Reduction of cargo traffic due to reduced exports, imports, transit and «outflow» of high-margin goods to alternative modes of transport, primarily road and river transport. Transportation of such goods is profitable for the railway. Reduction of freight turnover due to increased competition from road transport in the segment of long-distance transportation of certain goods and significant public investment in highways. Change of freight parts, according to tariff classes, in the structure of railway transportation – increase in the part of out-of-class cargoes and cargoes of the I tariff class, transportation of which is unprofitable along with reduction of the part of cargoes of the II and III tariff classes. Periodic, unpredictable increase in freight tariffs, which negatively affects the market. The main quantitative and qualitative parameters of the development of the rail freight market are revealed. The analysis of the rail freight transportation by the main types of cargo in domestic, transit and export-import transportation is carried out. The reasons for the decrease in the part of rail freight transportation in the freight market of Ukraine and the bases for reducing the volume of freight by rail transportation are identified. The reasons for the transition of high-value goods to road transport are revealed.
